Administration Basics
This page is under construction.
The following sections assume you are a member of the administrator role and therefore have the privilege to access the administration section of the site. If you are a site editor or site administrator, you may ignore all further pages in this guide.
Remember, you are working on a live site, and any changes you make in the administration section, including those which may completely disable the site(s), will be immediately visible to the internet at large. Do not “play around” or “experiment” in the administration section on a live site! If you would like to experiment, please ask me to set up a test server for you. My contact information is on the first page of this handbook.
If you are a member of the administrator role, a menu item entitled “Administer” appears in your Navigation menu. On the other side of that link are various and sundry widgets which will modify how the site operates. The proper operation for doing anything in the administration section of the site goes as follows;
- Understand what task needs to be done in the administration section of the site.
- Understand what steps you’ll need to take to accomplish that task.
- Enter the administration section and follow those steps.
- Exit the administration section when the task is complete.
Forgive me if I sound a bit harsh or condescending, but I’m trying to properly convey the gravity of the destructive power in your hands when you have access to the administration section. Hopefully you’re getting the idea!
(TODO: Backup system? Will a decent one be in place?)
After clicking the “Administer” menu item, you’ll be taken to a page which lists several sub-pages in the administration section with descriptions of each. This list will be quite large and you might feel overwhelmed by all of the options, but really it’s simple if you remember this rule of thumb; if you’re not sure if you need to access any particular administration page on this list, then you probably don’t need to access it. The descriptions underneath each link describing what that administration page does will be quite helpful.12
The following sections will list some tasks you will probably need to undertake in the course of administrating the sites, and what steps to take to go about them.
12If you don’t see these descriptions, look at the top of the list for a link that says “Show descriptions” and give it a click.
